Which case to use, and where

• Sentence case is ordinary writing: a capital at the start of each sentence and nowhere else except names. Most style guides now prefer it for website headings, buttons and email subject lines because it reads fastest.
• Title Case is for headlines, book and film titles, and product names. Short words stay lowercase, so you get The Lord of the Rings, not The Lord Of The Rings.
• Capitalized Case capitalizes every word. It suits names, addresses and marketplace listing titles where every word is a keyword.
• UPPERCASE works for short labels and signs. In a full sentence it reads as shouting and is harder to read.
• lowercase is useful for tags, usernames, email addresses and web addresses.

How Title Case decides

The converter follows the headline rules shared by the main style guides. Articles (a, an, the), short conjunctions (and, but, or, nor) and short prepositions (of, in, on, to, by, with) stay lowercase, except as the first or last word, or straight after a colon. Everything else gets a capital, including both halves of a hyphenated word such as Long-Term.

Acronyms and brand spellings are protected. If you type NASA, USA, iPhone or eBay, they are left exactly as they are. The one exception is text that is entirely in capitals, where there is no way to tell an acronym from a word, so everything is converted.

Fixing text copied from a PDF

Text copied out of a PDF often arrives with a line break at the end of every line and doubled spaces. Join broken lines rejoins the sentences while keeping paragraph breaks, and removes hyphens that were only there to split a word across lines. Clean up spaces removes doubled spaces, tabs and runs of empty lines.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion is done by your browser on your own device. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.

What is the difference between Title Case and Capitalized Case?

Title Case follows the rules used for headlines and book titles: short words like a, and, of, the and to stay lowercase unless they start or end the title. Capitalized Case simply capitalizes the first letter of every word.

What is sentence case?

Sentence case capitalizes only the first letter of each sentence, plus the word I, and makes everything else lowercase, the way ordinary writing looks. Names and acronyms become lowercase too, so check them afterwards.

Will Title Case break acronyms and brand names?

No. Words written in capitals, like NASA or USA, and words with capitals in the middle, like iPhone or McDonald, are kept exactly as you typed them, as long as the whole text is not in capitals.

How do I fix text that was typed with Caps Lock on?

Paste it in and choose Sentence case. Then check names and acronyms, since there is no way to tell them apart from ordinary words in all-capital text.

Can I undo a change?
