Pick the right watermark for the job

• Marking a document as not final: text such as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, diagonal, centre, opacity around 20 to 30%. It is obvious at a glance but the page stays readable.
• Branding proposals, quotes and portfolios: your logo as a PNG, horizontal, bottom right or centre, opacity around 30 to 50%.
• Discouraging copying of designs or photos in a PDF: text or a logo with Repeat across the page turned on, so there is no clean area to crop out.
• Keeping small print readable: turn on Put it behind the page content, so letters sit on top of the watermark instead of under it.

Sized to every page

The size slider is a share of the page, not a fixed font size. A diagonal watermark at 60% runs along 60% of each page's corner-to-corner line, so it looks the same on A4, Letter and a wide landscape slide in the same file. Landscape and rotated pages are measured the way you see them, and the watermark is turned to match.

Text stays text where it can

Text watermarks in English and most European languages are added as real vector text, sharp at any zoom and only a few kilobytes. For scripts the standard PDF fonts cannot show, such as Hindi, the text is drawn with your device's own fonts at high resolution and placed as an image, so every language works.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The watermark is added by your browser on your own device. The PDF, and any logo you use, are never sent to our server or anyone else's.

How do I add a CONFIDENTIAL watermark to a PDF?

Keep Text selected, type CONFIDENTIAL, leave the angle on Diagonal and the position in the centre, and choose Add watermark. Lower the opacity if you still want the page easy to read.

Can I use my logo as a watermark?

Yes. Choose Image and pick a PNG or JPG. A PNG with a transparent background looks best, because only the logo shows, not a white box around it.

What does behind the page content mean?

The watermark is placed under the text and pictures instead of on top, so the text stays crisp and fully readable. Scanned pages and pages with a solid coloured background cover everything underneath, so on those the watermark will be hidden. Leave the option off for scans.

Can someone remove the watermark?

A watermark added this way is part of each page's content, so it survives printing, emailing and copying. Anyone with PDF editing software can still try to edit it out, which is true of every PDF watermark. For documents that must not be changed, send them as a flattened image or a protected PDF as well.

Does it work with Hindi or other languages?

Yes. English and most European text is added as sharp vector text. Text in other scripts, such as Hindi, Arabic or Chinese, is drawn with your device's fonts and placed as a high-resolution image, so it still shows correctly.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?

Not until the password protection is removed. The tool will tell you if the file is protected.
